Jasmine scrambled up to run her finger along the curving pattern of the shocking tribal tattoo wrapped around Will’s shoulder and bicep. She felt full of energy, practically giddy with what had been amazingly good sex. The best sex she’d ever had, actually. She felt like dancing around the room in celebration.

He lay on his back, silent.

“Will?”

He groaned and turned off the light. “I really don’t want to talk about it.” He softened the words by pulling her into his arms so her head rested on his chest. He kissed her hair. “That was amazing. Are you sore? Did I hurt you?”

“Not at all. I can’t believe you have a tribal tattoo.” She ran her hand all over his firm bicep and squeezed. “Do you lift weights?”

“Yes.”

“So what’s the deal?”

He let out a long sigh. “I will give you all the parking spaces if you drop it.”

She lifted her head. In the dim moonlight filtering through the blinds, she could see him frowning. “Hey, no fighting. What’s the story behind it?”

He grimaced. “It’s a reminder of my stupidity.”

She reached over and turned the light back on. He squinted, his eyes closed.

“Tell me,” she said softly.

“It’s from when I was young and stupid.”

She quirked a brow. “You?”

He met her eyes in a pained expression. “Especially me. That tattoo was after one of many drunken, stoned nights in college.”

She laughed. “Will Levi, a party animal?”

“It’s not funny. I partied hard all the way to putting my own brother in the hospital. I gave him a ride when I was stoned out of my mind. I lost control of the car and hit a tree on his side. He went into a coma.”

“Omigod, I’m so sorry.” She stroked his stubbled cheek, suddenly sorry she’d brought up such a painful subject. “Did he survive? Your dad said he had two sons. Is he the other one?”

“Yeah, he did. He woke a few days later, but the damage was done. His leg is still messed up; he has to walk with a cane. His career prospects ended. He was like a different person after that.”

“And so were you.”

He looked surprised she understood that. “Yes.”

“Why did his career prospects end?”

“He just didn’t care about anything anymore. He dropped out of dental school. Now he’s a pothead living in California.”

She turned off the light. He pulled her close. She rested her head on his chest again, listening to his heart beat. She felt so relaxed and sleepy. She had a moment of panic where she thought maybe she shouldn’t spend the night, but she was so comfortable that she found she couldn’t move.

Next thing she knew it was morning, and she woke to an empty bed. Shit. He must’ve thought last night was a mistake. It probably was, right? They hardly ever got along. It had been too long for both of them and all that tension building between them had to go somewhere before they killed each other.

She scrambled out of bed and pulled on her clothes in a hurry.
